Yes, your child will find A Journey Through Narnia fun and fast paced. But your child will also find that the class requires a lot of writing. The reading is actually quite easy, but students are being taught to read for information as well as entertainment. It takes TIME. If you child has not done a lot of writing before, this can make for an interesting challenge. If your child has written a lot, it can still prove challenging. Many of the critical thinking issues tend to slow students down. The average student generally spends 10+ hours a week on her or her homework – and more when the Big Papers come due. If your child is a slower reader or has difficulty expressing himself or herself, please take this into consideration when planning student schedules. Weekly Assignments include: 1. Read four (4) chapters 2. Find the vocabulary words in the reading (generally 10-20 words) 3. Look up the definition of each word, and then use the word in a sentence correctly 4. Answer 8-22 questions about the text in full sentences 5. Write a 75-word minimum paragraph/essay 6. Write an 80-word minimum creative writing project 7. Find and write about General and Author Themes At the end of each book students must write a Big Paper (book report). The form will vary from book to book (I give them the form to follow). Regular weekly assignments do not change when this Big Paper comes due. At the end of each semester students must submit a creative Macro Project. I supply a list of suggestions for the students, and they select the one they want to complete. They must complete this project without direct adult help. Grading for assignments is based on completion of assignments, timeliness, content, grammar and punctuation, and following instructions. Grades for the quarter/semester are based on completion of assignments, participation in class (sharing through use of the microphone), and completion of Big Papers and Macro Projects. We spend the first couple of weeks learning literary terms, looking at C.S. Lewis and discovering how to do the assignments. Once we begin doing the assignments (week 3), we work steadily on them until the end of the year. Diagnostic Test – All new TPS students must take the diagnostic test for placement. Returning TPS students, who have sucessfully passed English I or II with a B grade, will not need to complete the diagnostic test. Materials list: Chronicles of Narnia – all 7 books. Please make sure it is a set that do not mind your student writing/marking in. Dictionary Remember – this class involves a lot of writing and thinking! .
